…A dim phosphorescent blob began to glow in the darkness, shimmering and spreading into a great hummock. Its outline slowly became clearer. It did not resemble a man, but neither did it look like an animal. It just lay on the floor like some monstrous living sack. It had no eyes, no face, but it radiated a terrible malefic intelligence.

Suddenly there ceased to be anything ghostlike about it. It developed a spotty white skin, leprous and unclean. It looked like a giant slug. Waves of evil emanated from its spineless body, beating against the edge of the pentagram. A disgusting stench of decay and corruption filled the room. As the creature writhed on the floor, it extruded slimy moisture that spread outward in rivulets of pestilence. It became solid, terribly real, a living being. Suddenly it started to laugh, a slow and horrific chuckle.

With the rapidity of a cat, but with none of the feline grace, the being leapt into the air, landing several meters across the room. Stephen spun to face it. Again the horrible chuckle, then another leap, and it was back where it had started.

Stephen watched helplessly as the thing moved forward. With a screech of anger, it reared back as it touched the edge of the pentagram. A hiss of steam and a vile stench issued from the thing as it retreated. It hunched down, then threw itself forward again. Another screech of agony. Another retreat. Thank God, the pentagram was holding. Stephen prayed. Several times the thing advanced, trying to break through the outer defenses. Each time they held fast.
