Reaching slowly into his shirt with his left hand, Garrett pulled out the gold crucifix that hung loosely around his neck—the crucifix that his mother had given him as a child. He studied it for a moment, reflecting on the memories the necklace possessed, and then tore it from his neck, crying out to the heavens.
"I renounce Your name. I renounce my faith in You. You who is said to be all-powerful and all-forgiving, yet You let me suffer like a monster. I renounce my belief in You!" Garrett screamed, tossing the broken Christian symbol into the darkness before hiding his face in the rock again and returning to his tears…
