Fear raced Jenny's heart. She mounted those stairs with all the anticipation of a man walking to the electric chair. She glanced Jared's way. Her white-knuckled grip on the banister mirrored his tight-fisted clench. Did he feel the pounding of her heart? Did his beat in fearful reply? He followed closely as was possible, ready to be there if she needed him. A word, a reach and she knew he'd whisk her away.

Jenny stood in that dismal hallway and stared at the darkened door at the far end. The blood roared in her ears so loudly she couldn't hear what Verna was blabbering about. Suddenly she felt very small. Before her, instead of a dimly lit passageway, she saw a dark tunnel lit by the flash of lightning. She hesitantly stepped to the end door as her aunt beckoned her to do. She was alone and it felt wrong. Someone should be with her.

Verna pushed the door open and smiled at Jenny, a smile that Jenny saw as an evil grimace.

"This is the room that belonged to your mother and father. Come, take a look."

"No," Jenny choked out in a whisper.

Verna grabbed her arm and pulled. "Don't make a scene," she hissed. Then she smiled again. "Come, look." She pulled Jenny into the dark room.

"No! I don't want to!" She yanked from Verna's grasp.

She spun around to flee and ran into her father. He grabbed for her.

"Let me go!" She pulled away so hard his wheelchair tipped over.

Jenny rushed past the cameraman, knocking him to one side. She threw herself against Jared and clasped her arms around him....
