"Burrow into the haystacks!"

Tom waited long enough to see his men were safe, then dove into the hay nearest him. Using the chute for covering, he dug deep and waited curled in a tight ball.

Footsteps beat against the earth. Orders shouted in German followed. There was another burst of gunfire, a smattering of laughter, and the soldiers moved again.

Tom measured every step, then felt his hopes sink when they stopped beside his hiding place. This time there was no warning save the sound of the rifle butt against the man's shoulder.
