…Blood had dripped down his left front leg and dried. It wasn't, I knew, the horse's blood.
I was lying on the ground. Depending on which way I rolled my head, I either looked down into the water or up at the horse. My skull ached as though it had been on the receiving end of a baseball bat. My vision bounced and whirled. Sometimes there were two horses; sometimes there were two guns. Only when at last I rolled up onto my hands and knees, joints shaking, did I lift my head and risk learning where I was. A sense of panic almost overwhelmed me. I was blind in one eye.
In the distance, a band of horsemen were trotting toward some sparsely-timbered foothills. The horsemen were Indians, and in their midst, rode one slumped and bound white man. I didn't need to see the man's face to know they'd taken Caleb. An emptiness around my heart already told me so. And they'd left me alone in this desolate landscape to die…
