…Marcus watched from his detached point of view as the third figure closely examined the dead woman's body. Thin, white hands ran over the corpse, pausing at the mouth, the nose, the breasts. With a sudden, violent movement, it tore open the blouse and stared at the exposed flesh. It paused, gazing at the wrinkled bosom as if confused as to what it was looking at, before making a sharp turn so that it was looking directly at Marcus. Then it grinned. It was that man again. And he knew Marcus was watching, had been watching, the whole time.
"What did you see, little Marcus? Did you see something you weren't supposed to?" it said, only it wasn't the raspy, ominous voice it had used before. This time it was using his mother's voice, and that nearly killed him.
He hadn't seen or heard from either of his parents in such a long time, he wondered if they were even still alive. But that voice, the one the dark man was using, had triggered a long-forgotten memory. A memory he had buried so deep that only the Creator Himself could have dug it out, yet here it was, laid out before him like so much dirty laundry…
